The other day I read a sad lengthy thread from BMX site “The Come Up” where BMX dooods just raged against the fixed gear freestyle scene. I kind of have mixed feelings about this which are complicated. On one hand I feel like the FGF thing does not effect BMX at all, so why all the hate? But then I think back to the late 80’s when BMX damn near killed itself by starting to include skateboard ads and skating footage in their magazines, prompting a zillion potential bicycler lifers to suddenly switch passions. But these new kids that are doing all the raging on the net about FGF prolly weren’t even born then, so that whole late 80s era doesn’t figure into creating their anger. They just see FGF as a BMX freestyle rip off.  Their angle is “if you are going to do tricks why not do tricks on a bike that is made for it?”.

Wow it has been a good couple of weeks biking-wise. Been riding the fixed at Suwanee Greenway, in different ways, always. Using the fixed there has made it so much more fun. Psuedo-cyclocross for slowpokes like me.  Most of the joint is paved, but recent bad weather/floods have some of the paved sections a wreck. Well, not so much anymore since they bobcatted them. I’ve added as much non paved riding on my usual loop as I can for that particular trail. Some of the very short section of single track is sooper sketch due to leaves.

Oh wait did I tell you I rode it in the dark? Yeah man. Fun times for sure. Me vs. the roots on the unpaved sections. I WON.

I’m so darn stoked on getting some riding in that I actually did some -bike maintenance- today. Ghetto-tech brake arm length solutions and a super special de-mudding at the local power wash.  BONUS LEVEL: a whole new rigged up padding system on the car rack, including pipe insulation and electrical tape. RAD.

Just for kicks I took Ye Ol Talera, bald tires and all, out to Gainesville College Trail. They have built an entire multi-level car parking situation there between the last time I was there and now. They also built a small wooden bridge to the entrance of the trail that is angled in such a cockeyed way I had to wonder if the people who built it were stoned or something.

IN OTHER NEWS: there is a discrepency between my yearly miles on one of my bike comps and the spreadsheet I must not have been logging every ride on. That’ll be fun to figure out.

Yesterday I met up with Graham to head to Dick Lane Velodrome for the 2009 Psychocross Halloween cyclocross jammity jam. It was probably the most fun race I have been to to date!  The weather was shitty, which was great for this type of racing. We drank a bunch of beer.

The East Point Velodrome Association is proud to announce that it will be hosting the first ever Psycho Cross event at the Dick Lane Velodrome on Saturday October 31st. The event will be the EPVA’s first foray outside of it’s Pro Race Series track cycling events. The race will be held all over the grounds of the Dick Lane Velodrome in East Point, GA as well as one part of the circuit that will run on the velodrome surface itself. The short course is sure to suit the more skilled racers, with plenty of tight turns and changing surfaces. The races are scheduled to be run throughout the afternoon with the featured A race to be held as the sun is setting. Fantastic food, beer, music and commentary will make this a race not to be missed.

More details will be available as they become finalized, and can be found right here . Proceeds from the race will benefit the EPVA in maintaining the Dick Lane Velodrome and managing and operating it’s cycling programs including the highly successful Bicycle Little League youth cycling program. Pretty sure I am going to hit this event up and grab some photos between beers

I got the PK Ripper Flick Trix a few weeks ago, now I am hunting down the Hutch Trick Star.

Today I had one of those rides that makes you fall in love with bicycles all over again.

Loaded up the fixed gear and headed out to good ol reliable Suwanee Greenway. It was drizzling when I left but I was pretty sure it wouldn’t turn into a downpour. Since I have been taking the fixed to SGW, I have been parking at the lot in the middle of the trail, which means in order to get a decent ride in I go out and back in two directions, which isn’t bad, but not as much fun as a proper loop. Today I decided to park at George Pierce Park and do the same loop I used to do whenh I took the fat tire bike. This means I took the fixed onto the dirt sections! Holy crap it was so much fun.

The dirt sections at SGW are no big deal, but they ARE dirt sections. Roots, mud, standing water,  everything except big climbs. On the MTB you can pretty much take any line you wat, but on the fixed you better pay attenton if you don’t want to get knocked off the bike. It is like an extension of the usual thinking ahead that you have to do when riding fixed. the dirt sections are just enough to keep you alert, and you will benefit greatly if you have good bike handling skills.

Riding in a loop instead of chaining out and backs together was great. I felt pretty good so I added an additional section that I had been avoiding…a section I thought I couldn’t clear. I cleared it with no issues.

The one time I did have an issue was on a short burst dirt climb where my tire slipped and I had to dab. Sucked. Maybe I will try some cross tires on the fixed gear or something.

i don’t have crap to say about biking right now. I kind of believe that if you aren’t riding then you shouldn’t be talkin…and believe me, I have NOT been riding lately.

I need to get it in gear

Dunno much  bout these. This one looks like it is some kind of compressed air system or something, which might be kind of neat if the system charges by way of pedal power.

This one looks like it might be some kind of fuel mixture rocket jet kind of thing. I’m thinking the two cylinders hold compresssed gas, then get mixed together just before they get to the big nozzle. Just guessing though.

If anybody knows what the real deal is, post in comments please.

X-games BMX stuff has been pretty much what I expected so far. Except BMX Park. The look on Daniel Dhers face after he didn’t make the cut to the finals was just priceless. Not hatin on him, it was just interesting because he has had such a lock on it for so long.

Anyway, big ups to my man Scotty CRanmer for absolutely rinsing it and locking up Gold in park. He has always been one of my fave riders.

I still think X-Games is more of a show than a real contest though
