When I grabbed my OnGuard Mastiff to go out and about Saturday, it fell apart. Literally, it just *plop* fell right apart when I picked it up. A quick inspection showed that a pin had fallen out, which is supposed to hold the chain to the lock mechanism. The thing is, there doesn’t seem to be much of anything to hold that pin in. I can freely slide it in and out without any resistance. The one on the other side is staying put, but I’m not convinced that these things are reliable at all. This is only a few months old, and has hardly seen much use, nevermind abuse.
I’m sure I can get it replaced, since (a) I bought it at REI, and (b) I’ve had a good customer service experience with Topeak, which is owned by the same parent company as OnGuard. But I’m not so sure I want the same lock. I really like having the combination lock, though, since it’s one less key to carry. I’m open to suggestions…
